By using Backstamp you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
Every identification and value range it produces is an estimate generated from the mark you supply. It is not a professional appraisal, an authentication, or financial advice. Marks are worn, faked and misread; condition, size, pattern and market conditions move real prices enormously. Always verify against current sold listings, and consult a qualified appraiser before making a significant purchase or sale. You are solely responsible for your buying and selling decisions.
What Backstamp does
Backstamp reads maker's marks, hallmarks and backstamps and returns a likely identification, an era estimate where the mark supports one, and a typical range of sold prices for pieces bearing that mark in good condition. Identifications come from a curated reference library and are shown with the exact characters that produced them, so you can check the reasoning yourself.
Accuracy
We work hard to keep the marks library correct, but we make no warranty that any identification, date or value is accurate or complete. Photographic reading depends on lighting, focus and how worn the stamp is. The app tells you its confidence level; treat a low-confidence result as a starting point for research, not an answer.
Subscriptions
Backstamp is free to use, including the full marks library, the field guide, the British date-letter tool and a daily allowance of decodes. Backstamp Pro is an optional subscription.

Prices are in US dollars and may vary by territory. Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase.
Auto-renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the period ends. You can manage or cancel a subscription in your Apple ID account settings at any time.
Free trial. If you take the annual free trial and cancel before it ends, you are not charged. If you don't cancel, the subscription begins automatically at the price above. Any unused portion of a free trial is forfeited if you buy a subscription during the trial.
Refunds are handled by Apple under the App Store's terms. We can't issue them directly.
Acceptable use
Don't reverse-engineer, decompile or attempt to extract the marks library; resell or redistribute the app's content; use automated systems to make bulk requests; or use the app to deceive anyone about what an item is or what it's worth.
Your content
Photographs you scan remain yours. You grant us only the limited permission needed to process an image and return a transcription. We don't store your images — see the Privacy Policy.
Availability
Backstamp is not offered in the European Union or the European Economic Area. We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the service, and we'll give reasonable notice of material changes where we can.
Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Backstamp is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We are not liable for any loss arising from a purchase or sale you made in reliance on an identification or value estimate. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law. Some jurisdictions don't allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
Changes
We may update these terms. Material changes will be reflected in the date above and noted in the app's release notes. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept it.
